Foundation in Low Strength Cohesive Soil
摘要
A suction pile is a foundation embedded into the sediment at seafloors through either pushing due to the weight of the pile and its associated mass or creating a negative pressure inside the suction pile. Steel material is ideal for the suction pile due its light weight and ability handle the suction pressure. In recent years, suction piles have been used as underwater foundations for various offshore structures and for offshore wind turbine structures with monopods and tripods. Suction piles are used where soft clay soils or low strength sediments at top layers and relatively dense sand in bottom layers are present which poses problems for conventional piles. Suction piles have several technical advantages over conventional piles; fast and easy installation, extremely large resistance due to its huge size, and easy retrieval by applying a positive suction pressure inside the pile, etc. From sustainability point of view, suction piles could easily be removed and relocated at another location of similar water depth and loadings. Details of the conventional piles, mudmats, grouting, and pile grippers with top low cohesive soil layers (approx. 20 m) and advantage of using suction pile shall be discussed in the paper.
