Working Conditions of Female and Male Safai Karamchari in the Sanitation Sector

The chapter examines the job profiles and working conditions of female and male Safai Karamcharis in Delhi and Ranchi. It aims at exploring the problems and issues experienced by the sanitation sector workers in terms of the quality of employment, occupational health and safety issues, access to housing facilities, etc. The chapter is based on the findings of a quantitative and qualitative survey conducted in the cities of Delhi and Ranchi. It covered 178 Safai Karamcharis in Ranchi and 150 in Delhi. It captures the real-life experiences of Safai Karamcharis through a combination of qualitative and quantitative survey tools. The importance of this chapter lies in examining the working and living conditions of women Safai Karmacharis. Additionally, it examines the impact of the government sanitation program called the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) on addressing the challenges experienced by sanitation sector workers, especially the women workforce.
