Explaining the Gender Gap in Unpaid Domestic Work of Adolescents in Urban India
摘要
The chapter explores the impact of education on the gender gap in the unpaid domestic work of adolescent girls. It examines whether literacy, school attendance, and education in age-appropriate schooling are associated with a reduction in their participation in unpaid domestic work, together with an increase in their involvement in learning and leisure or recreational activities. It focuses on adolescent children in the age group of 10 to 17 years. It is based on an analysis of unit-level data of the Time Use Survey 2019, brought out by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). The importance of the chapter lies in its methodology of disaggregating time use patterns of adolescents by their schooling status (attendance and age-appropriate grade). The findings offer valuable insights for formulating policies and programmes aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering young girls as they transition into adulthood.
