Shear Band Characteristics of Dry Silicious Sand in Ring Shear and Direct Shear Tests – A DEM Study
摘要
This paper presents a comparative analysis of shear band characteristics in ring shear (RS) and direct shear (DS) tests using the discrete element method (DEM). The primary aim is to elucidate the differences in shear behaviour and shear band evolution between the two test methods. The DEM model is calibrated against experimental data from RS tests. Comparative analyses are conducted on samples subjected to varying vertical stresses in both RS and DS tests. The results highlight the distinct peak shear behaviours observed in the two test types and demonstrate that the formation and development of shear bands are significantly influenced by apparatus constraints. These findings provide deeper insight into the fundamental differences between RS and DS tests and offer guidance for their selection and application in geotechnical engineering practice.
