This chapter presents Fontenelle’s Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes (1686) and its early English translations, situating them within the context of seventeenth-century scientific and political developments. Introducing heliocentrism and multiple worlds through dialogue, Fontenelle’s work influenced England after the Glorious Revolution. The translations by Domville, Glanvill, and Behn are analysed for their reflection of contemporary ideologies, as translators adapted terminology to suit religious and political contexts. Fontenelle’s texts contributed to Enlightenment thought by decentralising humanity’s cosmic role, and translation choices reveal ongoing negotiations about cosmology, with relevance to current debates on globalisation and planetary futures.
