Orthokeratology involves changing the curvature or shape of cornea to change the focus of light on the retina. The technique utilises specially designed high oxygen permeability lenses which can be worn overnight. Hence another term used for this form of treatment is Overnight Orthokeratology. The modern lens, when correctly fitted, brings about a rapid improvement in visual acuity which is termed as accelerated Orthokeratology. Since it uses reverse geometry lens, it is also called reverse geometry corneal reshaping. Orthokeratology is highly beneficial for children as not only it makes them spectacle free, but more importantly it has been shown in numerous studies that it slows down the progression of myopia. It is beneficial for those patients who are unfit for refractive surgery and in those professions where refractive surgery is not acceptable. It is also of benefit to all sportsmen indulging in contact sports especially those in the age group below 20 years where refractive surgery is contraindicated.

摘要
