Sexual Violence in Armed Conflicts: A Psychological and Human Rights Perspective
摘要
Sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) in armed conflicts is a serious human rights violation with lasting physical, psychological, and social consequences for survivors. This chapter examines its systematic use in war, with a focus on the ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023. It draws on survivor testimonies, reports from human rights organisations, and resilience-based interventions to explore the links between trauma, mental health, and human rights. The chapter highlights the urgent need for mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) as a core part of humanitarian responses. It introduces a manual designed for helpers and professionals working with survivors, offering practical tools for stabilisation, psychoeducation, and trauma-informed care. The impact on those providing support is also addressed, emphasising the importance of self-care to prevent secondary trauma. By taking a human rights-based approach, this chapter underscores the need for survivor-centred interventions, justice, and long-term support. Addressing SGBV is not only about responding to immediate needs but also about restoring dignity and rebuilding communities in post-conflict settings.
