Capturing the Paradoxes of Socio-Digital Lifeworlds of the Filipino Diaspora in Australia
摘要
In this chapter, I critically reflect on researching the ways Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people in Australia navigate their everyday experiences of settlement and marginality in an increasingly digital era. More specifically, I dive deep into the case of the Filipino diaspora by discussing methodological considerations and insights drawn from multiple projects examining the socio-digital practices of the Filipino diaspora in Australia. Building on an understanding of digital diaspora as a travelling concept (Candidatu et al., 2019; Leurs, 2022), I interrogate the umbrella term CALD by illuminating benefits and limits of digital and transnational connections, situated and negotiated within the migrant’s mediated lifeworlds. Importantly, I discuss the crucial role of multisited ethnography and visual methods to underscore the embodied and affective dimension of individual lives in a digital realm (Pink et al., 2016). In sum, this piece underscores a critical stance—conceptually and methodologically—on researching and analysing the meaning and notions of CALD by mapping lived experiences of the Filipino diaspora in a multicultural and digital environment.
