Industrial thermal furnace is a slow process which is commonly described with a hysteresis. Therefore, PID controller is used for temperature control, due to its stability and easily implement in practice. However, PID parameters are not able to adapt to different case study of coniNtrol, or variability of process parameters or integration saturation. For those issues, many solutions such as advanced PID schemes, or more powerful, modern controllers such as ILC are proposed to increase system performance and adaptability to many different thermal furnaces. This article will analyze the control performance of advanced PID solutions compared to ILC in terms of several performance indicators, such as overshoot and response time with diverse reference values. Therefore, this article emphasizes the role of PID controllers for temperature process variables with slow and hysteretic characteristics such as thermal furnaces.
