Since the early 1990s, I have served as the Chinese member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development and the head of the environmental economic expert group for nearly ten years. During this period, the environment, resources, and sustainable development have essentially become my research fields. In the discussions with several Ph.D. candidates studying environment and resource economics at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, I once asked them three questions. First, what is the research scope of economics? Second, what are the boundaries of economics? Third, how is this new branch of economics formed?
