This chapter explores demand-side strategies to combat the healthcare issues prevalent within South Asian economies. Most of the literature on health outcomes focuses on the supply constraints, shortages, and policy interventions on the supply side of the health sector. In comparison, discussion on the demand side is scanty. The discussion thoroughly examines various factors, including the regulatory frameworks governing healthcare, the condition and accessibility of transportation networks, the intricacies involved in insurance policy design, and the efficacy of pricing control systems. The coronavirus catastrophe brought two forms of employment loss: temporary lockdown-induced job loss and permanent impact job loss. The impoverished in rural areas and those living in urban slums who depend on daily income are some of the worst affected by COVID-19. The chapter discusses in several SA country context, the urgent need for improvements in social health protection, as even though many nations have expanded their coverage, insufficient or erratic funding remains a significant concern. Proper monitoring, incentive designing, and awareness campaigns are essential to create suitable demand-side intervention in such healthcare services because of their public good nature. The chapter shows that active involvement of the respective governments in the SA countries has been visible for the last decade or so, via innovative schemes and initiatives.
