Cao Pi (A.D.187–226), with the courtesy name of Zihuan, was the second son of Cao Cao. He succeeded the Han Dynasty and proclaimed himself as emperor, founding the Wei Dynasty. He was posthumously honored as Emperor Wen of Wei. His book Canonical Discourses (Dian Lun) had largely been lost, but one chapter within it, On Literature, had been preserved in books such as Selected Works of Refined Literature. This piece marked the first dedicated essay in the history of Chinese literary criticism to specifically address literary issues.
