Wang Guowei (1877–1927), with the courtesy name Jing’an and known as Guantang, was a renowned scholar from Haining, Zhejiang Province. He was a prominent scholar during the late Qing and early Republic of China. In his early years, he was passionate about studying Western idealist philosophy. He later immersed himself in the works of textual critic of the Qing Dynasty. Because he could assimilate achievements from Western bourgeois philosophy and summarize academic outcomes from Chinese classics and history studies, combined with his own deep thinking and diligent learning, he made remarkable achievements in numerous fields of literature and history. He integrated traditional Chinese literary theory with Western aesthetics, proposing unprecedented insights and exploring new fields that had never been touched upon before, advancing the research on traditional poetry and literature criticism significantly. It can be said that some of the idealist literary theories introduced later by bourgeois scholars could all be traced back to specific and subtle elements within his theories.
