The Tongcheng School got its name from the three founders, namely, Fang Bao, Liu Dakui, and Yao Nai. They were all natives of Toncehng, Anhui Province. They successively laid the theoretical foundation of the Tongcheng School. Fang Bao established several basic principles in writing, Liu Dakui made the theory concrete and popular, and Yao Nai combined the creation of ancient prose with the new situation after the rise of the Han school of classical philology and made a further development.
