Controversies in the Poetic Circles in the Early Qing Dynasty
摘要
Literary activities changed with the development of the political situation. Since the regime establishment by governors of the Qing Dynasty, the racial oppression became increasingly severe. The governors treated literati by means of winning over their hearts or persecuting, which brought great influences to literature. The school of elegant subtlety took the attitude of departing from reality, so their works were idle and lofty. The Style-Tone School took the attitude of concerning reality and advocated the edification of feudal ethics. These schools were born to cater to the political needs of governors; however, their literary theories had their own historical sources. The creative activities directed by these theories had limited achievements, but they embodied the diligent work of individuals, so they should not be negated categorically.
