Zhong Rong (A.D. 466?–518?), with the courtesy name of Zhong Wei, was from Changshe in Yingchuan (present-day Changge city, Henan province). He once served as a secretary for Xiao Gang, the West General of the Central Guards and Prince of Jin’an. He lived in the same period as Liu Xie, but his work Grades of Poetry (Shi Pin) was completed after the twelfth year of the Tianjian(the reign period of Emperor Wu of Liang, April 502–December 519)era during the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang, a little later than The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. Both books were written as a response to the negative literary trends of their time, but they refrained from criticizing the living literati of that era. They both made significant contributions to theoretical research; therefore, they were often discussed together by later generations.
