Voices of Tradition: Mirasi Singers in Colonial Rule
摘要
This chapter explores the Mirasi community of Punjab from historical, cultural, colonial dimensions. Traditionally, known as genealogists, bards, and oral storytellers, the Mirasis have played a crucial role in preserving the folk heritage of Punjab. This piece draws upon colonial ethnographies, contemporary sociological studies, and oral history to understand the transformations in their status, role, and identity. Over the last three centuries, the Mirasis, their profession, and identity have undergone profound changes; despite their cultural importance, the Mirasis have been subjected to social marginalization and caste-based discrimination. Today, the classical musicians are struggling for identity as colonialism has shifted their role in the society at large.
