Perspectives of Mothers on Quality of Life of Young Adults with Multiple Disabilities Having High Support Needs
摘要
Twenty mothers of adults (18–26 years) with multiple disabilities having high support needs were interviewed about the quality of life of their child. They responded to a standardized tool to assess quality of life and also answered open-ended questions to give perspectives about their child’s quality of life. The article qualitatively explores the various variables described by the participants and identifies the themes emerging from their responses for assessing the quality of life of the target group. The results are presented in a descriptive fashion, with the mother’s perspectives on emotional and behavioural wellbeing of the individual, support of family members and other quality of life issues for not just the individual but also of the family. The discussion focuses on the contribution of this study to not just fill the existing gap of the quality of life literature for the target group but also encourage professionals to be mindful of these perspectives during their service delivery; and especially their role during the planning of transition of students with special needs from school age to adulthood.
