Human-AI Interaction in Assistive Technology
摘要
Assistive technology (AT) encompasses devices, tools, software, or systems. These are specifically designed to enhance the functional abilities of individuals. The individuals include those with disabilities, older adults, or others with special needs. Its primary goal is to promote independence, improve quality of life, and facilitate participation in daily activities by addressing physical, sensory, cognitive, or environmental challenges. With the advancement of artificial intelligent (AI) technologies, human-AI interaction (HAII) in AT seamlessly integrates assistive technology and AI, ranging from basic devices to advanced high-tech systems. These technologies are characterized by human–machine interaction and adhere to the design philosophy of human-centered AI. HAII in AT provides personalized functions based on user preferences and historical data. Moreover, it actively interacts with users, providing feedback and suggestions to them. In this way, it guides the continuous optimization of human–machine interaction methods and the improvement of user experience. Beyond maintaining and improving personal independence and functions, HAII in AT fosters greater social participation and enhances the overall well-being of individuals with disabilities. This chapter discusses the current status and emerging trends of HAII in AT. It elaborates on the six major aspects and related research that contribute to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Additionally, it addresses the critical challenges in the development of HAII in AT. Finally, it concludes with a forward-looking perspective on their design principles and implementation platforms.
