The 1980s marked a pivotal turning point in the U.S. patent system. While IBM had been locked in prolonged antitrust battles with government regulators for decades, another tech giant, AT&T, was similarly entangled in antitrust investigations. Under the intense pressure of these probes on leading corporations, even in the high-tech fields of electronics and semiconductors, patents were not regarded as a strategic priority.
