In Chap. 4 , we discussed many patents, particularly those concerning automation and usability improvements in tabulating machines after Hollerith’s foundational invention patents had expired. However, the patent we’ll examine in this chapter is quite different: its application and use were less about protecting technical innovation and more about strategic business considerations.
