Through the stories of Bosch, Xerox, and HP, we’ve aimed to clarify our framework of core zones, borderlands, transitional zones, and frontiers. These cases show how companies use their accumulated technological strength in the core zone to expand outward. In this chapter, we turn to the examples of Disney and Pixar to explore another kind of support that the core can provide to its boundaries—one that is not merely technological, nor solely based on brand equity or IP rights, but rooted in the soft power and core philosophy of a company’s main business.
