In 1983, due to a flood of poorly made, low-quality games from unscrupulous developers, American consumers completely lost faith in video games, leading to a market crash that nearly wiped out the industry. Atari, one of the top companies, suffered massive financial losses. This event became known as the “Atari Shock.” Around the same time, Nintendo released its now-legendary Famicom (short for “Family Computer”), which quickly swept the globe and helped revive the American video game market.
