Democratization and proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education continues to transform new landscapes, providing pathways to accelerate the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably, SDG 4: Quality Education. This review argues how AI can be used as a tool to improve educational access, equity, and quality towards achieving a more inclusive and sustainable multi-faceted education. The employment of AI technologies in higher education addresses various challenges like educational inequities and quality improvement, development of learner-centred education, enhancing managing support, and other educational processes. Also, AI that promotes lifelong education and especially assists the different underprivileged groups is altogether relevant to the mission promoting high quality of education globally. But the issue of ethics regarding AI, in particular data protection, algorithmic equality, and the distribution of AI technology, also need to be considered. To promote responsible and equitable practice, it has to be addressed. This review also reviews existing literature and practical case studies of educational innovations including AI innovations which are already contributing to the attainment of SDG 4 and presenting opportunities for utilizing AI in the quest for development goals in higher education institutions.
