The immunological functions of glycans were investigated using well-defined synthetic glycans, with the aim of enabling precise immune modulation. Efficient methods for glycan synthesis were established, enabling identification of structural determinants of immunological activity with structurally defined synthetic glycans. Immune modulation was achieved using bioactive glycans and inhibitors of glycan biosynthetic enzymes. Furthermore, aspects of the emergent functions of glycans were elucidated by employing glycan conjugates, including self-adjuvanting vaccine constructs.
