Over the past two decades, social and emotional learning (SEL) has become a critical component of educational research and practice worldwide. It aims to improve the quality of basic education and help students adapt to twenty-first century learning, life, and future work. In 2011, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China, in partnership with UNICEF, initiated an SEL program in China. Up to now, this program has been rolled out to 275 elementary schools in 11 provinces in eastern and western China. In the decade leading up to 2021, an SEL implementation model and pathway with Chinese experience and characteristics was developed based on the social and emotional development needs of Chinese students. This includes a theoretical framework, curriculum materials, implementation approaches, tracking, evaluation, and other aspects. This chapter introduces the background, theoretical framework, program implementation, and intervention outcomes of the SEL program in China.
