This review explores the utilization of ChatGPT in English language teaching and learning, drawing on 45 research articles. This review offers a timely analysis of ChatGPT’s applications in language education. Using an analytical framework for content analysis, the review reveals diverse uses of ChatGPT, including language instruction, feedback and assessment, teacher support, conversation practice, translation, and research assistance. Prompts have proven particularly effective for providing feedback, building vocabulary, and aiding research activities. A significant emphasis is placed on writing skills, followed by speaking, listening, and reading. Research methods employed in the selected studies vary, with tests and interviews being the most common. Pedagogical strategies highlight the versatility of ChatGPT, notably in lesson planning, interactive learning activities, grammar correction, conversation simulations, and multimodal learning. Reflective and collaborative practices also emerge as key approaches. This review synthesizes the current research landscape, contributing valuable insights into ChatGPT’s evolving role in language education and offering practical implications for educators, researchers, and policymakers.
