Agricultural systems worldwide are increasingly challenged by the rise of emerging insect pests that threaten crop production, food security, and farmers’ livelihoods. This chapter explores the underlying causes of pest emergence, including climate change, globalization, monoculture practices, and pesticide resistance, which collectively accelerate pest adaptation and spread across regions. Key emerging insect pests are highlighted along with the ecological and socioeconomic drivers that promote their establishment in new regions. The effects on agriculture are discussed in terms of yield reduction, crop-quality deterioration, economic losses, and trade disruptions, with cascading implications for global food security. Current mitigation strategies are critically assessed, including integrated pest management (IPM), biological control, genetic innovations, and digital monitoring technologies, with attention to their opportunities and limitations. Finally, this chapter emphasizes the importance of adopting proactive and sustainable approaches to “future-proof” agriculture, including the implementation of climate-smart practices, enhancing biosecurity measures, and promoting international collaboration in pest surveillance and management. By presenting both challenges and opportunities, this study underscores the urgent need for resilient agricultural systems capable of withstanding the escalating risks posed by emerging insect pests in a rapidly changing environment.
