Pharmacological Activities Associated with Catharanthus Species
摘要
Catharanthus species are well recognized for diverse pharmacological activities due to the presence of bioactive phytochemicals and secondary metabolites, particularly terpenoid indole alkaloids like vincristine and vinblastine. These species possess potent anticancer, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antiinflammatory properties. The compounds act through various mechanisms, including cell cycle arrest, enzyme inhibition, and free radical scavenging. Traditional medicinal systems have long utilized the plant Catharanthus for treating numerous ailments. Recent pharmacological studies support and expand these traditional uses, highlighting the therapeutic potential of different plant parts of member species of Catharanthus. Continued research into their bioactivity is crucial for developing novel drugs and validating their role in modern medicine. This communication deals with all pharmacological activities associated with Catharanthus contributing to drug discovery programmes.
