Septic Arthritis of the Native Joint

Septic arthritis of native joint may be monoarticular, oligoarticular, or polyarticular. Pathogenesis of the same encompasses various mechanisms apart from decreased immunological response. A thorough differential diagnosis be made and looked for in case of septic arthritis of native joint. For a good yield of causative microorganism, correct and efficient investigative method for synovial fluid analysis should be used to enhance the yield of positive results. This will help in accepting best antibiotic protocol for the positive result obtained on investigation else an empirical antibiotic policy may be required. Surgical treatment ranges from arthroscopic to open surgeries and the trend to treat septic arthritis is shifting toward the minimal invasive technique.
