Skills Stations and Training
摘要
Simulation-based procedural training is an essential component of pediatric trauma preparedness, especially for primary care providers (PCPs) who play pivotal roles in the initial resuscitation of critically injured children. This chapter outlines the core procedural skills necessary in pediatric trauma management, aligned with the ABCDE framework; Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure. Through structured ABCDE framework and skills stations, learners are trained using hands-on simulation techniques to perform and assist with life-saving trauma resuscitation interventions such as oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway insertion, bag-valve-mask ventilation, thoracostomy, chest tube insertion, intraosseous access, cervical spine immobilization, pelvic binder application, and limb splinting. Each skill section addresses key anatomical considerations, preparation steps, patient and family communication strategies, real-time monitoring, and post-procedure care. Emphasis is placed on the active role of PCPs in maintaining procedural safety, documenting events accurately, and participating in effective teamwork. The chapter also integrates crisis resource management (CRM) principles, such as closed-loop communication and Situation, Background, Assessment, and Rexcommendation (SBAR), to enhance interdisciplinary coordination and situational awareness during trauma emergencies. Dedicated checklists for each skill station promote standardization, consistency, and confidence among PCPs, allowing them to identify gaps, reflect on their practice, and improve performance. Special attention is given to pediatric-specific nuances, including smaller anatomical landmarks, developmental considerations, and the need for sensitive family communication during high-stress scenarios to help the PCPs for their day to day clinical work. Overall, this chapter serves as a practical, simulation-focused guide to strengthen procedural competence and collaborative decision-making in pediatric trauma care. It is designed to empower PCPs and nursing professionals with the tools and confidence to deliver safe, timely, and family-centered trauma interventions.
