Farmers as Villains: Case of Air Pollution in National Capital Territory of Delhi and Stubble Burning in North India
摘要
This chapter analyses the issue of air pollution in the National Capital of Delhi and the stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana. The practice of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana has been projected in the national media and newspapers as the prime cause of the declining air quality in the capital. Thus the farmers have been framed as criminals by the government and national media. This chapter discusses how the politics over pollution has transformed the image of farmers of Punjab from national heroes to criminals. It showcases how, despite there being other causes, only farmers are blamed for the problem of air pollution. The punitive action taken by the government is against farmers’ dignity. In this chapter, primary and secondary data have been used to prove the arguments. The primary data has been collected from Jhabelwali village in the district of Sri Muktsar Sahib (Punjab).
