Caste, Hierarchy and Dignity: A Study of Rural Uttar Pradesh
摘要
This chapter attempts to probe the question as to why dignity is an inadequate tool to comprehend a hierarchical social structure such as caste. It makes a strong case for considering honour as the central category to understand social relations. To do so, it delves into the transformation of caste. It suggests that instead of dispensing with the centrality of hierarchy, caste has found a new space in culture to legitimise its reproduction and persistence in contemporary times. However, the culturalisation of caste does not mean the end of caste or its associated pathologies, but rather their masking in the name of culture.
