People story places and places story people. Places are more than what can be expressed through words; they contain ambience, and multilayered, multitemporal traces that affect and are affecting. This chapter explores the site of Sandhills Community garden, a place that sits on the unceded lands of Awabakal Country in so-called Australia. Layers of colonial violence are entangled within everyday affective bonds of joy and care that arise from more-than-human moments of relational liveliness. Here, I story the ambivalence of the extraordinary within such familiar and ordinary places. Drawing on geographies of enchantment I consider the role of emotions such as wonder, awe, grief, nostalgia and melancholia to consider the worldmaking potentials of stories. While Sandhills Community garden highlights the contested nature of place, I explore the possibilities for how everyday extraordinary affects may forge new emotional bonds between people and place.
