Global gender equality has been severely hampered by intersecting crises and a well-organised movement against women’s rights. In this volatile contemporary context, is Gender and Development scholarship from 30 years ago still relevant? Through charting the rise of Gender and Development, particularly in Australia and the Pacific, this chapter addresses this question and details current challenges for achieving global gender equality. This chapter further explores how Gender and Development scholarship must grapple with legacies of colonialism, different understandings of gender and sexuality, and emerging crises, such as climate change. After providing this overview, this chapter then outlines the key insights from contributions to this volume and suggested ways forward for Gender and Development research.
