The contemporary city is warming. Not just because of global warming, but also because of the way we plan, construct, and live in cities. In addition to being a noticeable sign of unsustainable urbanization, the urban heat island (UHI) effect—where cities get noticeably hotter than nearby rural areas—has become a difficult design problem for planners, architects, and legislators (Cheshmehzangi et al. 2023). The heat island is a spatial representation of how density, concrete, asphalt, and design decisions influence the microclimates of daily life rather than a technical oddity. The UHI has emerged as one of the most pressing and significant manifestations of ecological imbalance in the built environment in the era of climate volatility.
