Juniperus is an evergreen conifer. According to Adams and Schwarzbach (2013), there are about 75 existing species of the genus Juniperus, which are divided into three sections: section Caryocedrus, section Juniperus, and section Sabina. Section Sabina includes about 60 species, and its distribution is worldwide. According to Mao et al. (2010), the main part of this Section Sabina can be further divided into three clades: North American junipers with serrated leaves, Eastern Hemisphere cones with oval seeds, single-seeded, whole-leaf junipers, multi-seeded, whole-leaf junipers. The distribution of this third clade is widespread, covering East Eurasia, Central Asia, Central Europe, North Africa, regions along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa, and the North American continent excluding eastern Canada, between 20° and 50° north latitude.
