The demand for critical minerals is rapidly increasing, posing serious challenges to critical mineral production industries. Critical mineral production using existing technologies is not sustainable in the long term, given their severe environmental impacts, diminishing ore grades, increasing ore complexities, and low volumes of secondary production. This contrasts with aluminium and steel production, for which both primary and secondary production technologies are well-matured. This chapter introduces critical minerals, reflects upon their supply risks, environmental impacts, and sustainability challenges, and presents different modern technologies as opportunities for future critical mineral production.

摘要

The demand for critical minerals is rapidly increasing, posing serious challenges to critical mineral production industries. Critical mineral production using existing technologies is not sustainable in the long term, given their severe environmental impacts, diminishing ore grades, increasing ore complexities, and low volumes of secondary production. This contrasts with aluminium and steel production, for which both primary and secondary production technologies are well-matured. This chapter introduces critical minerals, reflects upon their supply risks, environmental impacts, and sustainability challenges, and presents different modern technologies as opportunities for future critical mineral production.
