The chapter will introduce Islamic Philosophy in its classical form as distinctive yet one that draws on earlier philosophical traditions. Key scholars of the medieval period will be used to represent both its distinctiveness and reliance on those earlier traditions. The philosophies of the Greeks, Persians, and Arabs will be identified as the most patent influences. The chapter will conclude by identifying the impact that Islamic Philosophy had on the medieval civilizations that came under its influence.
