Gemini surfactants constitute a special class of surfactants. They possess two hydrophobic chains and two polar headgroups connected covalently through a spacer group. These compounds are of current interest on account of their unique physico-chemical behavior, such as very low critical micelle concentrations, enhanced surface activities and high viscoelasticities. They have wide range of applications in detergency and cleaning, emulsification, environmental remediation, biotechnology, and materials science. Furthermore, these compounds have significant potential in various fields due not only to their remarkable properties but also to the ease of their tunability. The objective of this chapter is to provide a concise account of the physico-chemical behavior and some important applications of gemini surfactants with particular reference to some selected examples. This chapter discusses the influences of the spacer, hydrocarbon tails, and headgroups on the aggregation and the interfacial characteristics of gemini surfactants. Morphology of the micelles formed by these surfactants has also been discussed. The interfacial activity, the solubilization efficacy, and the rheological behavior of these species play a crucial role in majority of their applications. This chapter reviews these properties which help understand the various applications of gemini surfactants considered here. Overall, this chapter aims to provide a thorough understanding of gemini surfactants and their potential applications, highlighting their versatility and potential impact on various industries.

摘要
