The current chapter gives a broad introduction to compressed hydrogen storage tanks in terms of technology evolution, design principles, and implementation methods. The chapter starts with an introduction to pressurized gas storage tank technology in order to set a platform concerning hydrogen storage technology. Classification and working principles of compressed hydrogen storage tanks are explained. Important design elements such as pressure rating, safety factor, optimized weight, and storage capacity are covered in detail. A detail explanation related to construction methods and implementation of hydrogen tank technology using high-pressure designs is presented. Important design considerations and requirements in relation to tank safety and performance are touched upon in this chapter. A special focus is given to construction materials during tank design with respect to hydrogen interaction and mechanical requirements. Advancements in composite and metal designs are also presented in this chapter. Final standards and methods in compressed hydrogen tanks are described to make these reliable, durable, and safe for hydrogen energy technology.
