Politeness Markers in Persian Requests: A Pragmatic Analysis
摘要
Politeness is a key component of effective communication, particularly in cultures where indirectness and courtesy are valued. In Persian, politeness markers play a central role in everyday interactions. This study explores the use of politeness markers in Persian requests, drawing on House and Kasper’s (1981) politeness taxonomy. To achieve this, data were elicited from 31 Iranian university students through a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) focusing on the speech act of request. A total of 744 responses were analyzed to identify the types and frequencies of politeness strategies employed. The analysis revealed that Persian speakers employed a variety of politeness structures, including politeness markers, consultative devices, and understaters—alongside supportive moves such as grounders—to construct contextually appropriate requests. The findings offer valuable insights for researchers in pragmatics and have practical applications for Persian language instructors and materials developers.
