Perception of Acehnese on the Existence of Majapahit
摘要
Acehnese people, known for their patriotism, hold diverse perspectives on the existence of the Majapahit empire. This impression arises from historical accounts that the Majapahit royal expedition, including Gajah Mada, visited and engaged with Acehnese communities during the era of the Samudera Pasai kingdom. This study is based on three main objectives. First, it aims to highlight Acehnese perception patterns toward Majapahit through oral legends preserved in their collective memory. Second, it assesses Acehnese perceptions using historical and toponymic evidence. Third, it examines the factors contributing to these perceptions. This research also presents data on Majapahit vestiges still visible today, approached from historical and anthropological perspectives. There are three questions that are discussed in this research. First, how were oral stories from Acehnese society are being used to reveal Acehnese opinions of Majapahit? Second, to what extent Acehnese perception could be assessed based on the historical and toponymic facts? Third, how do the reasons contribute to these perceptions? These three questions are elaborated in the findings of this paper.
