The Characterization of Gajah Mada in Kakawin Gajah Mada
摘要
Gajah Mada was a Mahapatih who played a crucial role in guiding the Majapahit Kingdom to its greatest glory. He was known as a loyal and powerful figure, symbolizing patriotism and national unity. His most famous legacy is the Palapa Oath: “Until I have united the archipelago, I will not enjoy palapa (pleasure). Initially, many underestimated this oath, mocking his efforts. Yet, Gajah Mada ultimately succeeded in uniting the archipelago. The narrative of Gajah Mada's patriotism was later recorded in an old literary work (manuscript). In this work, Gajah Mada serves as a protagonist, much like characters in other old literary traditions, including kakawin. As a protagonist in a kakawin, his portrayal is uncommon. This can be observed in Kakawin Gajah Mada, composed in ancient Javanese language in the twentieth century. This article aims to explore the characterization of Gajah Mada in Kakawin Gajah Mada, using a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings show that, in Kakawin Gajah Mada, he is depicted largely as a flat character. He is characterized as the originator of brilliant ideas, enabling him to attain his position as Mahapatih. Furthermore, his intellectual prominence stems from devotion, obedience, and loyalty to the king, as well as his courtesy and loyalty to religious teachers and the teachings in religious books.
