This chapter concludes the study of the Mascarenhas lineage by tracing four centuries of adaptation within Portugal’s shifting political and imperial landscapes. From medieval service and strategic marriages, to roles in Africa, India and Brazil, family members leveraged alliances and royal favour to secure titles, rewards and estates. Though some branches faltered, others—like the House of Fronteira—survived into modern times through its flexible alignments and cultural stewardship. Linking history with anthropology, the chapter also attempts to engage with the ideas of the 2005 publication Ocasião (a collaboration of the marquis and anthropologist), and highlights the nobility’s survival both as heritage and identity, ultimately revealing how tradition reshaped itself to ensure continuity.

摘要
