Consumer Perception and Public Opinion on Nanotechnology
摘要
Nanotechnology, defined by the control of matter at the nanoscale, has risen as a revolutionary influence in various fields such as medicine, agriculture, energy, and environmental science. Although its possible advantages are extensive—spanning from precise drug delivery and enhanced diagnostics to eco-friendly energy options—its acceptance among the public continues to be intricate and layered. This chapter explores how consumers perceive nanotechnology and how society reacts, highlighting the influence of ethical, cultural, regulatory, and communication aspects on public opinion. While nanotechnology has the potential to transform contemporary life, concerns regarding nanoparticle toxicity, ecological dangers, and socio-economic disparities persistently fuel discussion. Public comprehension is frequently restricted, with informational gaps worsened by conflicting media stories, unclear regulations, and insufficient transparent communication from industries and policymakers. Attitudes specific to sectors also shape perception; although healthcare applications tend to be positively viewed, food and agriculture applications encounter greater skepticism. Governance frameworks fail to keep up with innovation, leading to a disjointed regulatory environment. The chapter highlights the importance of inclusive, forward-thinking governance and interdisciplinary teamwork to foster public trust. Efficient communication, education, and involvement of stakeholders are crucial to guarantee responsible development and fair access to the advantages of nanotechnology. The future path of nanotechnology depends not just on technological advancements but also on societies’ capacity to tackle ethical issues, regulatory hurdles, and public opinion in a coordinated global approach.
