Research on Urban Linguistic Landscapes in China and Abroad
摘要
Linguistic Landscape (LL) has emerged as a prominent research topic, attracting increasing attention from a growing number of scholars, including linguists, language educators, sociologists, and translators. The scope of linguistic landscape studies has expanded considerably, shifting from an initial focus on language itself to encompass both linguistic and non-linguistic symbols. Research settings have likewise broadened from physical spaces to digital environments. These developments have amplified the social significance of linguistic landscapes, particularly through non-linguistic symbols. Enabled by modern digital multimedia technologies, linguistic landscapes have become ubiquitous, influencing nearly every facet of society. This chapter traces the historical evolution of linguistic landscape studies, outlines key research perspectives, and reviews relevant studies from China and abroad.
