We propose a taxonomy for levels of automated artistic autonomy in scenarios where AI is involved in an artistic process. The resulting five levels provide a scale along which to position scenarios where human artists and AI divide responsibilities in a creative process. Different levels are defined by who is responsible for various steps within the creative process: the human artist or a machine. We envision it as a relevant step towards defining artistic responsibilities of AI, and an attempt to bring clarity in current and future discussions about the autonomy given to generative AI systems within artistic scenarios.

摘要

We propose a taxonomy for levels of automated artistic autonomy in scenarios where AI is involved in an artistic process. The resulting five levels provide a scale along which to position scenarios where human artists and AI divide responsibilities in a creative process. Different levels are defined by who is responsible for various steps within the creative process: the human artist or a machine. We envision it as a relevant step towards defining artistic responsibilities of AI, and an attempt to bring clarity in current and future discussions about the autonomy given to generative AI systems within artistic scenarios.
