Characterization of Weak Rocks, Rock Masses, and Its Resistances

Power infrastructure and supporting foundations account for a significant cost of total cost of development. Despite the advances that have since been made in the geotechnical investigation of weak rock and in the design & construction of piles, pile foundation in weak rocks still present difficulties to the pile designer and constructors. The behavior of rock socketed shaft depends upon nature and magnitude of structural loads and factors on one hand and design input parameters related to rock mass characteristics like rock type, rock mass engineering properties, constructability. This paper focuses mainly on understanding characteristics of weak rocks, its properties, to capture the parameters through qualitative and quantitative technical indices. Methods to determine the resistances of weak rocks from the captured parameters in terms of horizontal deflection and rotation of drill shaft foundation for pole structure. To demonstrate the processing of above given parameters & method at random data is selected from one of the countries in Middle East part of the world. Carter-Kulhawy method is used to analyze laterally loaded piles in rock to evaluate lateral resistance.
