For generations, Early warning systems (EWS) have been the first line of defence for society against natural dangers (Quansah et al., Journal of Terrestrial Observation 2:5, 2010). These systems have attempted to foresee environmental risks and initiate prompt actions, from the employment of meteorological radar in modern times to the river gauge readings made by ancient civilizations.
